Shoehorn’s Hatband Invitational

Saturday, September 28, 2024 (2:00 PM - 4:00 PM) (PDT)

Description

This series by Portland performer and composer M.C. Shoehorn includes some of his favorite artists from the local music scene. Featuring keyboardist Dan Gaynor for all three dates, they will be joined by drummer and songwriter Martin Zarzar on September 7th in a trio format.

On September 14th Shoehorn and Gaynor will appear as a duo, and the final installment of the series will feature Shoehorn’s Hatband with a young rhythm section consisting of drummer Rivkah Ross and bassist Xylyn Hathaway.

Shoehorn’s Hatband performs an entertaining variety of material ranging from originals to movie themes, standards, pop covers, blues, and world music numbers, including Latin and Japanese tunes. All the musicians in the band are versatile and skilled jazz players.

In addition to the leader’s CDs Café Cirque and the Blue Monk, Dan Gaynor has appeared on countless gigs with Shoehorn over the years, and worked with high-profile local jazz greats such as Nancy King and Chuck Israels, and with the Oregon Symphony. Martin Zarzar was born in Peru and attended high school in Portland, and toured the world as the drummer for Pink Martini before leaving that band to concentrate on his own work as a singer-songwriter and social media phenom.

Rivkah Ross is a talented drummer and composer who leads her own band as well as working as a side musician. Her debut album, Dare to Hope, will be released on September 1st at the Montavilla Jazz Festival.

Xylyn Hathaway is a dynamic young bass player and a prolific composer and producer who regularly releases new music on their own imprint, including an improvised duo session with Shoehorn titled Thin Air. At age 25, Xylyn has compiled an impressive resumé and regularly appears in various configurations with his peers as well as holding down the bass chair with local jazz drummer Ron Steen at Wilf ’s at Union Station on Wednesday evenings.

All of these performances will run from 2-4pm at Director Park in the heart of downtown Portland.
